Why horsepower alone tells you very little

The two figures that decide whether a pump will do your job are flow and head. Flow is how much water you need per hour; head is the total vertical lift plus the friction the water meets travelling through your pipework. A pump that delivers beautifully at 20 metres of head may deliver almost nothing at 60 metres, and the horsepower on the box does not tell you where that line falls.
